Ericsson Nikola Tesla 14th Summer Camp

This summer, Ericsson Nikola Tesla held its, already 14th year in a row, International Summer Camp – an excellent example how concrete and systematic collaboration of science and economy can be a reliable foundation for the society's development and progress. The Summer Camp, which hosted about 600 students from Croatia and abroad in the last 14 years, aims at top graduate students, mostly of electrical engineering and computing, and lately, it aims at students of other faculties, as well.

Thus, in this year’s Summer Camp, 82 students from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Hungary participated, under the expert supervision of 50 mentors, majority of who are experts from Ericsson Nikola Tesla, but also experts coming from Ericsson companies in Sweden, Hungary, Canada and China.

During this year’s Summer Camp, a total of 28 projects were successfully realized, regarding support to company’s laboratory for the networked society, IPTV, VisualCom and m-commerce, telecommunication network visualization and related services, research-development tools and efficiency and software engineering and development.

The list of organizations with which Ericsson Nikola Tesla collaborates on realizing Summer Camp is growing. The participants from Zagreb were the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, University of Zagreb; Algebra - University College for Applied Computer Engineering, and Polytechnic of Zagreb, and the participant from Split was the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Split. An excellent collaboration was realized with the faculties from Rijeka and Osijek. Thus, the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Economics, University of Rijeka, and the Faculty of Engineering, University of Josip Juraj Strossmayer in Osijek, participated. From the neighboring Bosnia and Herzegovina, the participants were the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Sarajevo; Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Tuzla, and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Computing, University of Mostar.

The Summer Camp core value is preparing students to gain work experience by working on real ICT projects, and the Camp is also an excellent opportunity for the students to get better acquainted with the ways and conditions of working in a leading ICT Company, such as Ericsson Nikola Tesla.  The experience so far showed that, for many present Ericsson Nikola Tesla employees, it was precisely the positive experience gained in the Summer Camp was crucial for employment.
 
On September 26, 2014, the closing of the Summer Camp was marked with day - long actives at Ericsson Nikola Tesla, including demo sessions and the official gathering, during which the visitors could talk to students and mentors, who worked on projects, see several expert presentations, and attend the official Summer Camp closing ceremony, which was live stream broadcasted and followed by students and mentors in our R&D Center in Split. 

Aside with students and their mentors, Zagreb gathered the representatives of Academia, led by Prof. Ph.D.  Vedran Mornar, Minister of Science, Education and Sports of the Republic of Croatia.

MSc Gordana Kovačević, the President of Ericsson Nikola Tesla, had a message for the gathered Summer Camp participants and distinguished guests: “We are growing and developing, following the pace of the networked society, but also by exceeding its existing limits, moving towards the future, throughout our focus on innovation. The creativity of our employees enables our company to forecast the future needs of the society and individuals, and to find the solutions, which make the world a better place. The idea of our Summer Camp project, which we implemented, was to bring education in a closer contact with the market and by doing so, to contribute the improvement of our industry competitiveness, by continuously investing in developing experts, who are ready to face the market challenges.“
Prof. Ph.D. Vedran Mornar, Minister of Science, Education and Sports of the Republic of Croatia, highlighted:

„Ericsson Nikola Tesla is one of the most quality ICT companies in Croatia, and for a number of years it has an excellent collaboration with the faculties. Ericsson Nikola Tesla Summer Camp is a good example of collaboration between science and economy, and it enables the students to work in a real environment and on real projects. I would be happy it there were more such projects in Croatia.“

The gathering was also addressed by the Head of collaboration with the Academia, Ph.D. Darko Huljenić, one of the Summer Camp founders, who presented the history and continuity of the Camp.  He thanked the faculties that participated this year in the Summer Camp and presented them the awards for successful collaboration. Ph.D. Saša Dešić, this year’s Head of Summer Camp, while speaking about the Summer Camp, emphasized that this year, aside with the students of electrical engineering and computing, students studying in other fields and from neighboring countries also participated.  Hoping that the long – term successful collaboration with Ericsson Nikola Tesla will continue, Prof. Ph.D., Maja Matijašević, representing the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, expressed her satisfaction with this year’s Summer Camp.

A student of electrical engineering from Bosnia and Herzegovina, a female student of psychology from Zagreb and a student of economy from Rijeka spoke about their working experience during Summer Camp. In the end, Nataša Doko, who participated for the second time in a row in the Summer Camp in Split this year, expressed her satisfaction by being recently employed by Ericsson Nikola Tesla, which opened the door for her professional development.
After the official closing ceremony, a tour of Ericsson Nikola Tesla Technology Road was organized for the guests, presenting the new innovative ideas, developed at Ericsson Nikola Tesla, which are now an integral part of Ericsson solutions for the networked society.
