First 5G network in Montenegro: cooperation between Crnogorski Telekom and Ericsson Nikola Tesla

  Categories: Projects Events

In cooperation with Ericsson Nikola Tesla, Crnogorski Telekom users in Podgorica now have 5G network access on several locations. This makes Crnogorski Telekom the first operator in Montenegro to put the 5G network into commercial operation.

After successful testing in the north of Montenegro last year, first commercial telephones were connected to the 5G network in Podgorica with the participation of Stjepan Udovičić, CEO of Crnogorski Telekom, Darko Grgurović, Director of the Agency for Electronic Communications and Postal Services of Montenegro, Vuksan Vuksanović, Chief Administrator in Podgorica, and Ivan Barać, Director of Sales and Marketing for Hrvatski Telekom & Crnogorski Telekom at Ericsson Nikola Tesla.

The implemented Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) technology enables dynamic use of current radio frequencies, which means that in the area covered by the 5G signal, users can use their 4G or 5G devices in the same frequency range. Therefore, 5G devices will provide their users with all the benefits this technology has to offer, and the devices which are compatible with 4G can use 4G network capacities. 5G is available to all Crnogorski Telekom users, regardless of their phone plan, provided they have a corresponding device and are located in the area covered by the signal.

This will be followed by covering the entire Podgorica with 5G network until the first in a series of goals is achieved - full coverage of the capital of Montenegro. At the moment, network capacity is being increased and latency reduced in order to meet the technical conditions for high-speed 5G in the future, and 5G is expected to achieve full speed after the corresponding RF spectrum auction. By the beginning of summer, the plan is to cover tourist locations in view of the upcoming season during which communication needs are greater, and then the plan is to cover the rest of the country.

With its superior capabilities such as high bandwidth, high data transfer speeds, low latency and the ability to connect a large number of devices with a high degree of security, 5G will provide Crnogorski Telekom users with advanced communication capabilities and development of industry and society as a whole.
